Storage ideas for quirky spaces

When it comes to storage space, every inch counts. And whether you´re building a home, remodeling a room or just wondering how to make odd spaces in your home more useful, Merillat has some ideas for you! These solutions--all of which can be achieved with stock cabinetry--are some you may not have thought of, especially for those quirky spaces that "suddenly appear" as you near completion of your project. That space may be big or small ... in any case, be creative!

1. Under a window seat.
   Take advantage of the space under a window seat by installing basic cabinets or slide-out baskets. It´s a great place to store extra blankets, toys, table linens, candlesticks or bulky items like baskets or dried flower arrangements you don´t use every day.
2. Laundry rooms.
   Depending on the size of your washer and dryer, you may end up with an odd-sized gap between the side of the machine and the wall. A space as narrow as 12 inches allows you to install a base cabinet--it´ll come in handy for laundry supplies, dust rags or clothes pins. You can save additional space by moving your ironing board out of the way by installing a pull-down ironing board that folds into a shallow wall cabinet when not in use.
3. Under the staircase.
   Don´t let this space go unused! It´s an ideal place to tuck those small items that tend to clutter up your floor - like boots and children´s backpacks, or even magazines and catalogs. Use spice drawers, open cubicles, and wall lattices in creative combinations with cabinet units for charming, well-organized storage.
4. In the garage.
   Install durable cabinetry in your garage to keep your tools and supplies safely stored and well organized (see photo at right). Better yet, think ahead and set yourself up with a custom work center! A simple base cabinet unit makes a great home gardening center; a couple of base units, a countertop and an apron drawer give you a durable workbench with plenty of storage for tools, yard, and auto supplies.
5. Enclosed patio.
   Installing built-in cabinetry in a three-season room or screened-in porch can provide convenient storage for your indoor/outdoor and seasonal items. 6. Frame the fireplace.
