Millennials – the generation reaching adulthood in the early 21st Century – are now our largest category of new home buyers. They’re also among our most enthusiastic fixer-uppers. And Millennials’ tastes in kitchen and bath design aren’t as strictly Modern as you might think.

We’re seeing many young homeowners embrace the Modern Farmhouse style. The watchwords here are comfort  and craftsmanship, hearth and heritage, simplicity and sustainability.

Whether they’re rehabbing a neighborhood bungalow or a genuine Midwestern farmhouse, Millennial homeowners carefully blend rustic furnishings and Industrial-inspired accents. They’re focusing their living spaces on family heirlooms and artisanal details – yet with no sacrifice in the latest high-end amenities and high-tech conveniences. The result is a Modern Farmhouse both warmly welcoming and completely contemporary.

  • Aged Technique gives cabinets a naturally weathered, lived-in look.
  • Open shelving airs out the kitchen by cutting down on the sea of doors.
  • Beadboard or V-groove paneling hints at cottage-style living. It’s easy to install.
  • White on white can be just as warm and welcoming as natural wood tones.
  • Matte accents in hardware, lights and fixtures add contemporary flair.
  • Countertop selections need to fit functionally, durably and aesthetically.
